Faculty of Science

The School was formed in 2007 following the merger of the Departments of Botany, Ecology & Biodiversity and Zoology. Research at the School focuses on Molecular & Cell Biology and Ecology & Biodiversity. The School’s high-impact research has attracted worldwide attention, and its academics devote themselves to quality teaching.

The Department of Chemistry is committed to pushing the frontiers of science and discovering new knowledge, and to transmitting that knowledge through quality teaching to nurture the next generation. 

The Department continues to help improve our home - Hong Kong through research, teaching and graduates, and has earned an international reputation that is reflected in the nationalities, research interests and global collaborations it has.

The Department aspires to the highest standard of excellence in education, research and knowledge exchange, while striving to provide an environment where students can benefit from a good solid education in mathematics.

The Department of Physics is committed to excellence in both teaching and research. As a research intensive department, its members engage in a wide range of fields related to physics and astrophysics, and have established extensive collaborative network worldwide. 

The School strives to advance education and research across the fields of computer science and data science, artificial intelligence, statistical decision sciences, fintech, and actuarial science, and to foster a vibrant academic community that drives innovative education, promotes multidisciplinary research, and facilitates technological innovation.

The School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) was founded in March 2025 and represents a unique collaboration between the Faculties of Medicine, Engineering, Dentistry and Sciences at the University of Hong Kong. SBME is a trailblazer in redefining BME education and research — empowering the next generation to transform healthcare by linking engineering, life sciences, and clinical translation.

Established in 2024, the School of Innovation, HKU (I-School) nurtures curious minds into capable innovators through human-centred, project-led and AI-enabled learning. Situated in real-world ecosystems, it empowers students to move beyond the classroom and tackle complex, interdisciplinary challenges that matter to a rapidly changing world.
