TIG is a major sports event in Asia since 1949 but suspended for a decade due to financial crisis in Asia. Hosted by HKU this year, it is eventually revived.
Over 600 athletes from 6 universities of 5 places competed in the 9 types of sports in the past week. Other than HKU, the others teams are: National University of Singapore, the Universiti Teknologi Mara (in Malaysia), Fudan University (in Shanghai), University of Macau and Macau Polytechnic Institute.
The TIG was developed from a sporting foray by HKU and universities in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore in 1949. Held on a triennial basis, TIG aimed at nurturing team spirits, cultural exchanges and cross-boarder friendship amongst athletes. However, in late 1990s, it was suspended due to financial crisis in Asia. With the ardent support from Dr Stanley Ho, HKU alumnus; HKU Vice-Chancellor Professor Lap-chee Tsui; as well as TIG patrons, alumni and students, the TIG is eventually revived this year.
