HKU Top Student-Athletes to Compete in the 15th National Games

Thirty-six elite student-athletes from The University of Hong Kong (HKU) will participate in the 15th National Games of China. Competing in the nation’s premier sporting event, they will showcase their relentless pursuit of excellence, striving for Hong Kong’s glory.

Professor Peng Gong, Vice-President (Academic Development) of HKU, lauded the athletes for their exceptional dedication to both academics and sports. “These outstanding individuals exemplify the perfect balance of intellectual and athletic excellence, which demonstrates that success can be achieved both in the classroom and on the field,” said Professor Gong. “As you embark on this extraordinary journey, know that HKU stands firmly behind you. We have every confidence that you will inspire Hong Kong with your achievements, both as athletes and scholars.”

HKU student-athletes will compete in 14 disciplines, including tennis, athletics, fencing, and triathlon. Among those athletes are tennis player Coleman WONG Chak Lam, who recently achieved remarkable results at the US Open; fencer CHOI Chun Yin Ryan, who clinched the gold medal in the Men’s Foil Individual event at the 2025 Fencing World Championships; and badminton player TSE Ying Suet, who secured her first title at the 2025 Badminton Asian Championships, winning the gold medal in mixed doubles. The group also includes one athlete competing in the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities in para table tennis.

These student-athletes, drawn from various faculties, were supported by admission pathways such as the Top Athletes Direct Admission Scheme (TADAS) and the Student-Athlete Learning Support and Admission Scheme (SALSA).

Professor Bennett Yim, Director of Undergraduate Admissions and International Student Exchange at HKU and Chairman of the HKU TADAS Selection and Review Committee, said, “Through our admissions schemes for sports scholars, we are delighted to see the outstanding student-athletes admitted to HKU achieving remarkable accomplishments across various fields. HKU will actively support their dual development in both academics and athletics, and we look forward to their continued success in the international sports arena.”

Dr Michael Tse, Director of Centre for Sports and Exercise at HKU said, “To see our student-athletes rise to the challenge of the National Games is deeply inspiring. Their journey is a powerful reflection of courage, discipline, and the unwavering pursuit of excellence. At HKU, we believe that sport builds character and resilience—qualities that shape future leaders. Through our dedicated support, we strive to create an environment where these young talents can dream boldly, train fiercely, and achieve greatness both in sport and in life.”

The Top Athletes Direct Admission Scheme (TADAS), launched at the beginning of the 2022/23 academic year, aims to facilitate the enrolment of exceptional athletes into the University, with competitive admissions primarily based on candidates’ sporting achievements. The University will support the student-athletes admitted via the Scheme with personal academic advice, flexible learning arrangements, counselling services, and physical training to facilitates the holistic development of the athletes, helping them pursue their academic aspirations, explore international exchange opportunities, and continue to excel in their sports careers.
